Over a 25-year career, Chef Makoto Okuwa has crafted his unique take on Japanese cuisine, combining the traditional art of Edomae-Sushi with modern flair.

Makoto's culinary journey began in Nagoya, Japan, where at 15, he apprenticed with master sushi Chef Shinichi Takegasa. After ten years of training, he moved to Washington, D.C., to work with Chef Masaharu Morimoto. In 2007, he opened his restaurant, Sashi Sushi + Sake Lounge, in Manhattan Beach, California, earning accolades from Los Angeles Magazine and the Los Angeles Times

His restaurant in Bal Harbour, launched in 2011 with Stephen Starr, showcases his evolving artistry with dishes that pay tribute to his roots.

After successfully opening more acclaimed restaurants in Panama City, Sao Paulo, Caracas, Washington DC and Vail Colorado, Makoto has now opened his first location in Santo Domingo.
